The Aurora Central Catholic Varsity Football team dropped under the .500 mark for the first time this season, with a 28-26 loss at Walther Lutheran on Saturday afternoon on Homecoming in Melrose Park. The loss is the Chargers third in a row after starting the season out 3-1.
The Broncos and Chargers traded scores in the first half. Senior quarterback Kyle Clechenko (St. Charles) scored on a pair of ACC first half touchdowns. However, both point after attempts failed, as the Broncos enjoyed at 14-12 halftime lead. Both teams once again exchanged scores in the second half. Luke Dickerson (Sugar Grove) tallied touchdown runs of 19 and 12 yards.
The difference of the game proved to be with 3:21 remaining, after the Broncos rallied to tie the score. Walther Lutheran successfully executed a fake extra point for a two-point conversion, giving the Broncos the 28-26 deciding advantage.
The Charger offense, was able to get the ball back into Bronco territory, down to as far as the 31 yard line, but the drive stalled on fourth down.
Steven Amoni (Yorkville), Brian Bohr (Aurora), Clechenko, and Dickerson combined to rush for over 300 yards for the Chargers. Defensively, Steve Belovich (Hinckley) and Clechenko tallied interceptions for the Chargers, who won the turnover battle 2-1.
The Chargers return home this weekend for Senior Day. Aurora Central Catholic will host Wheaton Academy on Friday at Bob Stewart Field. The sophomores kick-off at 5:30 p.m., the varsity will follow at 7:30 p.m.
