The 2011 Aurora Central Catholic Football season is officially underway, as the Chargers have begun “Two-a-Days” in preparation for the August 26th opener at home against Rockford Lutheran. With the IHSA Football season beginning on Wednesday, the Chargers wasted no time in getting started, kicking off their season at 12:00am Wednesday morning. The 2nd Annual “Midnight Madness” was held at the Aurora Sports Dome this year, due to the re-sodding of Bob Stewart Field this past spring. The two-hour workout was a spirited affair that featured work in all three phases (offense, defense, special teams).
“It was great to get back to work and now have a destination,” ACC Head Coach Brian Casey said. “In the summer, it was ‘camp’, but now the kids know there is a ‘game’ in the near future, we had a lot of enthusiasm and urgency this morning.”
The Chargers were back on the practice field at 10:00am for their first practice on campus since the programs summer camp. Despite the little amount of rest, the second session proved to be another step in the right direction as both the Varsity and Frosh/Soph levels got some great work in what turned out to be very comfortable temperatures.
“Our second practice was even better than the first,” Casey said. “We started a little slower, which I think is to be expected considering the lack of sleep, but once we got into our Tempo period and beyond, our kids came to work, and we really got better.”
Practices in helmets only continued on Thursday and Friday, as the Chargers continued preparations for the 2011 season. Thursday featured a heavy amount of Offensive work, while Friday’s emphasis was on the Defensive side of the ball.
“We have seen a lot of good things over the last three days, but we are real excited to see what we can do now that we get to add the pads,” Casey said. “There comes a point in time where you need to see some contact to confirm the things you see in shirts and shorts. Tomorrow is a fun day for the kids, and a real important day for our football program”
The Chargers will get the day started with a lighter workout early Saturday, followed by the first live contact of the season, with a late morning practice.
